“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.” (Exodus 3:13-14). I AM is the name of the Lord because He Is Who He Is more fully and completely than anything else in the universe. There is not a single particle of His makeup or character that is at odds with the true essence of who He is. When we say we are trying to be like Jesus, of course we want to be as gentle and loving and wise and strong as He is, but really, it's not so much that we want to change every aspect of our personality until we are virtually a carbon copy of Him, but rather, we want to become as He Is - an I AM like He is, perfect, complete, fully integrated with all of our parts and passions and pursuits in perfect alignment with our core identity. When we have each become our own I AM, then we are not self conscious or worried that we are better or worse than anyone else, we do not try to act differently to gain anyone's approval, we are not envious of anyone else's gifts or jealous of the gifts bestowed upon us. We are an I AM. We exist boldly, nobly, and independently of anyone else's opinions or judgements or agendas. We do the right thing, not because it is hard or easy, nor because we are courageous or compassionate, but because we are who we are and would not think of doing anything else. We are each a child of the Great I AM, and we each have the capacity to fulfill the measure of our creation and become an I AM in our own right, perfect, finished, complete.
