Music And Lyrics

When God communicates with us, He tells us in our minds and in our hearts. We call this the song of redeeming love. A song is made up of two parts - lyrics, for our minds, and music, for our hearts. We need both the music and the lyrics if we are to truly hear and to sing the song of redeeming love. As logical creatures, we need the lyrics for our own comfort and sanity. We like everything spelled out neat and orderly so that it can make sense to us. As emotional creatures, we need to feel the music flowing through us to reassure us that the course we are on is the correct one. Music has a power over virtually all other artforms to elicit a strong and immediate emotional response. Melodies can bypass the brain and pierce our hearts, injecting feelings that are beyond words. God's thoughts are higher than our thoughts. When Christ prayed among the Nephites, it was said that human words could not give voice to the wonderful feelings and emotions that His prayer invoked. When we feel a truth in our hearts that we can not articulate with words in our minds, this is the Holy Ghost putting God's thoughts, which are higher than our own and thus incomprehensible, directly into our hearts through the wordless music of the song of redeeming love. And when the Holy Ghost whispers clear, specific words into our minds, it is not just so that we can understand God's thoughts, but that we can carry out the lyrics the we hear so that we may sing the song of redeeming love. All of us can be moved by a piece of music that has no lyrics, but we can only sing along if we know the lyrics. The song of redeeming love is playing all around us all the time, if only we will open our ears to hear it, that the music may enter our hearts and the lyrics may enter into our minds.
