“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:” (Joel 2:28). I find it interesting that in the context of Revelation from our Heavenly Father, dreams and visions can sometimes seem interchangeable. Some of the most powerful revelations that have ever been recorded have come from the dreams of inspired men and women. I was trying to figure out why the Lord would choose so often to communicate in our dreams while we are asleep and I think I may have an answer. I believe that as opposed to when we are wide awake, when we are in a dream state, our mental framework is more similar to the timeless, omniscient, omnipresent mental state of our Heavenly Father. When we are dreaming we are not distracted about what has happened before or worried about what might happen next. We are fully absorbed in the present moment. Our waking minds demand that everything fit into a neat, logical sequence of events, but our dreams don’t obey those kinds of rigid rules. God is able to reveal eternal truths in our dreams that we would not be able to absorb or comprehend with our waking mind. I know that the Lord does pour out His spirit upon us at all times, but sometimes, when we are dreaming, we are able to catch a little more light and knowledge than we could do while we are awake.
