“Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do. Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark. For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.” Nephi tells us that the Words of Christ will tell us all things that we should do. He also tells us that the Holy Ghost will show us all things that we should do. As we read and seek to understand the scriptures, the Lord will reveal to us what we should be focused on doing. And as we go forth with faith and try to do these things, the Holy Ghost will show us how to do them. Nephi was told to go get the plates, and then not knowing beforehand what he should do, Nephi was shown by the Spirit how to accomplish that command. Neither being told nor being shown is better or worse than the other. We need both. The more we study the scriptures, the clearer we will perceive our mission, and the more we will be able to give heed to the Spirit as He shows us how to do what we have been told to do. As we feast more fully on the words of Christ and as we accept more fully the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost and trust in His guidance more completely, we will need to be told less and less what to do and be shown less and less how to do it as we get closer to understanding the mind of the Lord and are more committed to seeing His will accomplished.
