The Gift of Beholding Angels

“And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits;” (Moroni 10:14). On the night that Jesus was born, there were so many people crowding into the little town of Bethlehem that there was no room to be spared for a woman on the verge of giving birth, and she and her husband both direct descendents of the royal line of King David. However, even though a whole host of angels burst into glorious song to welcome in the birth of the Son of God, out of all those hundreds of people crammed into every available room and sleeping space available, only a few shepherds were given the gift of beholding angels that night. How often might we be blindly and unwittingly and busily going about our day and so concerned about the daily minutiae that we fail to look up and to see the heavenly hosts of angels going about the Lord's work each and every day? Angels are holy messengers who proclaim glad tidings of great joy that God has neither neglected nor condemned His children, but has sacrificed His Only Begotten Son to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of all of His children. God is deeply invested in the details of our lives, and if we will only seek for and accept the gift of beholding angels, then we will be able to witness firsthand all of the amazing and wonderful and life-altering things that God does for us from moment to moment. When the prophet Elisha and his servant found themselves surrounded by a great host, “his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha” (2 Kings 6:15-17). Some of us may legitimately feel buffeted about by Satan and his hosts of hell, but if we can be blessed with the gift of beholding the legions of angels that surround us, then we will see that those that are with us are more than those that are against us. The more angels that we behold, the greater confidence we will be able to place in our Heavenly Father and His plan for us.
