Warm For The Rest Of Our Life
“Give a man a fire, and warm him for a day, but set a man on fire, and warm him for the rest of his life.” (Terry Pratchett). It may seem unlikely that such an irreverent quote can be the source of a spiritual thought, but stay with me. We talk about the Spirit of God like a fire is burning. Fire can be seen in a negative way because of its destructive ways, but fire is also a source of light and warmth. We can say that when we do good deeds and share the gospel by example we are giving someone fire for a day, but when we convince them to come unto Christ and accept His gospel, we can warm them with the fire of the Spirit of God for the rest of their life. Spreading the gospel can be like the spreading of a great forest fire, where each new fire goes on to start other fires. It’s not a perfect fire, but just as when the Savior said that whosoever drinketh of the waters He shall give shall never thirst again, so too, whosoever is lit with the fire that He shall give will be covered in imperishable flames that never go out and are never quenched, but provide light and warmth for the rest of our lives.
