Wise men from the East brought to Jesus at the time of His birth gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold may have been a symbol of Jesus’s destiny to become the King of Kings, since most kings throughout history have relied heavily on gold to maintain their authority and right to rule. But what might the gift of gold mean for us? Gold is a symbol of purity. When placed in almost any natural environment, it does not react. It doesn't rust or corrode. When placed in the furnace, other impurities will burn away but gold remains. Because of Jesus Christ, we can become pure as gold. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, we can walk into the fiery furnace and not be alone. As we continue to place our trust in and rely upon Him, He will continue to refine and purify us. And then one day, if we remain faithful, Jesus will present us to our Father in Heaven as a gift of pure gold to dwell with Him forevermore.
