Don’t Let The Salt Of The Covenant Lose Its Savor
“Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?” (Luke 14:34). Salt enhances flavor. It adds complexity to sweetness and richness to bitterness. The point of salt is not to turn everything into one desirable flavor but to allow us to appreciate and to savor all of the different flavors. No taste is truly bad if we take the time to savor it. In the scriptures salt is often used to symbolize our covenants. We keep our covenants not so it turns all of our experiences in life into only sweet, easy experiences, but because keeping our covenants allows the Spirit to be with us to enhance all of our experiences, both the sweet and the bitter. The Spirit can help us learn to recognize the beautiful and the wonderful in all of the different flavors of life and when we have the Spirit we can learn to savor even the most bitter experiences. If we find that we are just going through the motions when it comes to keeping our covenants, or in other words, if the salt of our covenant has lost its savor, then we need to determine what is preventing us from having the constant companionship of the Spirit, so that our salt can once more have its savor.
