Lighthouses use an array of lenses to concentrate and focus light into a narrow beam to indicate reefs, shoals, rocks, and other hazards that ships might encounter close to shore. In a similar way, the temple uses an array of lessons to concentrate and focus the Lord’s light and knowledge into a narrow beam to indicate spiritual reefs, shoals, rocks and other hazards we may encounter on our journey through the seas of life. Consistent temple attendance can help us to keep our eye focused on the glory of God, stay on the covenant path, and think celestial. Just as the beam of light from a lighthouse strafes back and forth across the sea to continuously illuminate the safe and dangerous parts of a continuously shifting landscape, it is important that we go back again and again to arm ourselves with fresh insights and inspiration to tackle whatever new and unique challenges we may come across. We will always have access to the Lord’s light and truth as we pray and study the scriptures and hold onto our covenants, but it is only through the lighthouse of the temple that we can keep that light focused on what matters most.
