A Pound Of Cure

They say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Unfortunately, due to the fact that one of the main purposes of this life is for us to be tested, along with the fact that we are in a corrupted and fallen world filled with imperfect people lacking the knowledge and the capacity and the will to always make the best choices, prevention is not always possible. Therefore, if we don't have enough ounces of prevention to go around, then we had better work on making sure that we have enough pounds of cure. β€œFor they were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men; And inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.” (D&C 103:9-10). We can't always stop bad things from happening to people, especially to people that we love, but we can do our best to try and save them. The Lord said that if we are not doing everything we can to be the saviors of His children, then we like salt that has lost its savor. Salt is used to cure meat. If it can't be a cure, then it's no better than white sand to be trodden underfoot. We need to set aside our own self-consciousness, our own self-centeredness, and our own self-righteousness and just be the Saviors, be the light and the salt of the earth, and be the pound of cure since there was no ounce of prevention in the first place. We may not always be the best person for the job but often we are the only person for the job. And we may be the first to recognize that someone needs saving because we were the ones that put them in jeopardy in the first place. Sometimes we are the first responders to a car crash because we were the ones to cause the car crash. But if we can set aside our guilt and our shame and our perhaps greatly justified fear that our aid will not be welcomed or appreciated, we can still nevertheless be saviors to those who are desperately in need of saving. I know that being a savior is not always easy or convenient or even particularly safe, but if we truly want to become like Jesus Christ, then we must become saviors just like He is. The world needs as many pounds of cure as it can get. I hope that we can all have the courage and the humility to jump in and save our brothers and sisters, even and especially when we put them in jeopardy in the first place.
