The Power Of Ordinary
Whenever we think about the future, or even about the present, we often imagine that our life could and perhaps should be much more extraordinary than it so often is. We may feel discouraged that we aren’t always living our “best” life. Our meals don’t blow our minds. Our jobs don’t always fill us with passion. We go to church and feel inspired by the talks but then two days later can’t remember what was said. We read the scriptures or pray and we feel the Spirit but we aren’t struck dumb with awesome revelations. There is power in the ordinary, everyday moments of our lives. There is power when we choose to do the right thing, even if we don’t get some showy miracle. I imagine for every day that Jesus and His disciples stopped on the side of the road to give sight to the blind or cleanse a leper, there were plenty of days where they just walked from one town to the next and there were no miracles or life-changing sermons, but just simple, ordinary walking. The people in Lehi’s vision who made it to the Tree of Life did so because they held fast continually to the iron rod. They didn’t only cling to it when the mists of darkness got thick, or the path got extremely narrow. They didn’t only hold onto the rod during the extraordinary moments of their lives. They held fast to it continually, even in the boring, ordinary moments in the middle where the path was extra wide and there were no mists and it didn’t really seem to matter if they held onto it or not. There may be times when we wonder whether our prayers or our small acts of kindness or our simple, ordinary steps of faith get noticed or recognized or acknowledged or appreciated. But our Father in Heaven, who notices when even a single hair falls from our head, definitely pays attention to every single good deed and step of faith we take, no matter how ordinary, and out of our small and simple acts, He brings to pass great things in His marvelous work and a wonder.
