The Dove and the Olive Branch
As I was reading the story of Noah and his family preparing to leave the Ark after the flood, I thought about the symbolism of the dove carrying back the olive branch. In a non-religious context, the dove and the olive branch are two of the most recognized symbols of peace, possibly because of this very scene. But in a religious context, the dove most famously represents the Holy Ghost, and the olive branch is symbolic in several places of a group of people God has separated from the main tree to preserve unto Himself. I think if we combine those two, we can see that when we choose to live with the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, we can be carried away from destruction and preserved unto the Lord. Noah and his family were the only ones left who chose to live with the Spirit, so like an olive branch, they were plucked from a withered and dying tree and carried under the protection of the Spirit until the Lord could find a new, healthier tree onto which they could be grafted. I know that when we choose the companionship of the Holy Ghost over all other considerations, we can be protected both spiritually and physically.
