Praying Instead of Saying Prayers
In Jesus the Christ, James E Talmage talks about how hypocritical prayers are "the saying of prayers in place of praying." Saying prayers instead of praying might sound like splitting hairs, but it's actually a very important distinction. Praying is an act of faith. It comes from our very soul. When we pray, we are exercising the very same power described in Genesis when God said, Let there be light. When we pray sincerely, with our whole heart, and with faith unwavering, we are committing the divine spark within us to changing the world around us to bring it and ourselves more in harmony with the will of God. If we are truly sincere in our prayers, and if our prayer is consistent with our Father's will, then what we say are not mere words but statements of fact and truth that will manifest as reality as we continue in power and faith to carry out the words said in our prayers. This is the true and real and tangible power of praying. It is as different from saying a prayer as a building is different from the picture of a building. Saying a prayer is just talking while kneeling down with our eyes closed. But praying is the act of aligning our will with our Father's so that when we pray, it has the same exact power as when God prayed and the Earth was created.
