Sacrifice Is Practice
I was thinking about why sacrifice is so important and I think what it really is is practice. We live in a world where anything and everything can be taken from us at any given moment. Losing what we love can be really, really hard. But sacrifice gives us a chance to practice losing on our own terms. When we sacrifice, we control the time and manner of our loss. What's more, we do so with a spirit of thanksgiving. We are grateful for the time we had with that person, place or thing, but we make a conscious effort of will to give up what we love because we know in the long run it will be good for us and also because we need to practice losing. Sacrifice enables us to face losses that are outside of our control with a spirit of gratitude for the experience we had before we lost, and also with hope that this loss will lead to our gain and give us experience. It is important to learn how to deal with tragedy and loss because we are all going to lose constantly throughout our life so we might as well develop a healthy respect for loss and learn the healthiest way to learn from our losses.
