Perceive The Light

“And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fulness of my gospel; But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men.” (D&C 45:28-29). To perceive in the original Latin meant “to take entirely.” If we are truly to perceive the light of the gospel, then that means we have to entirely take the light into us. Those who sit in darkness only ever receive a tiny fraction of the light. They allow most of the light to bounce or reflect off the surface, not unlike the seeds in the Parable of the Sower that fell by the wayside and were snatched up by birds before they had the time to lay down roots. To take entirely the light is to absorb it so fully that we begin to emit light of our own. That is the key to fully perceiving the light is when we have begun to shine light of our own. We have the choice to either sit in darkness and not receive or perceive the light but let the best that our Heavenly Father has to offer bounce and reflect off of us without ever really sinking in; or, we can choose to walk in the light, taking entirely every ray of light that comes our way, receiving, perceiving and fully absorbing and then shining back out light of our own. I know that the light of the gospel is ours for the taking, and the Lord wants us to receive it with all of our hearts.
