Angels We Have Heard On High

More than any other holiday or time of year, Christmas has a wealth of songs devoted to it. Halloween, Easter, New Year's - they might have one or two songs that some people know, but Christmas has dozens. From Thanksgiving to Christmas Day, Christmas music is unavoidable, some might even say inescapable. It is only right and proper that Christmas be a time filled with music since even the very first Christmas was filled with the songs of choirs of angels. There is a reason that Christmas is a time where people tend to be more joyful, more selflessly charitable, and more dedicated to spending time with their loved ones and a big part of it is that we are being flooded with Christmas music - in our homes, in our car radios, in most stores and shopping malls and even TV ads. “For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.” (D&C 25:12). Whether it's the Tabernacle Choir or Mariah Carey, whether it's specifically about Jesus or about Jolly Old St. Nick or his pal Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the majority of Christmas Songs are the song of the righteous - they are about giving and sharing and spending time with and loving one another. They are a prayer unto the Lord and they testify of Christ. “Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.” (2 Nephi 32:3). When we testify of Christ, whether at the pulpit on Sunday or to the tune of “Angels We Have Heard On High” while out caroling, we speak and we sing with the Angels and the choirs of Heaven. The reason that Christmas feels different than other times of the year is because, thanks to the constant presence of Christmas music, we are all feasting on the words and the lyrics of Christ. I hope we all take the time as we listen to Christmas Music this holiday season to try and hear the Angels from on high joining in and testifying of Christ.
