Many Are Called, But Few Answer
Jesus tells a parable of a king preparing a wedding feast for his son. Invitations go out to all of the noble and important, the great and the powerful, but all of the invitations get rejected. So, then, the king has his men go out and invite anyone and everyone who will accept the invitation - the halt and the lame, the poor and the homeless, the outcasts and the rejects, the weak and the simple. We may often think that we are too weak, too poor, too unskilled, too inexperienced, too unimportant to help out in God’s great work. We may think we don’t have enough time, enough talent, enough courage to make any meaningful difference. But if the work is still there, that means all of those people that we believe would be better suited to handling that problem turned it down. They didn’t show up. They were called but they rejected the call. If there is still work to do, it falls on us to go out and do it, even if we feel we don’t belong or can’t possibly measure up. God will take care of the gaps in our knowledge or skill or creativity. He just needs us to respond to his invitation. He just needs us to show up. He just needs us to come and follow Him. He’ll take care of the rest.
