Spiritual Bifocals

Bifocals are glasses with two different lenses for each eye to help correct both nearsightedness and farsightedness. In life we can have trouble focusing both on what's right in front of us, as well as what's far off in the distance. But as we seek for the constant companionship and guidance of the Holy Ghost, we can receive divine assistance in focusing on both what matters most right in front of us as well as what matters most down the road. When we put on our spiritual bifocals we can focus on the small and simple things that we can do right now that still fit within the longer term goals of becoming perfected through Christ. It is important to be able to have a clear image of what's right in front of us while simultaneously keeping a clear image of our ultimate destination. If we overly fixate on the immediate and let the distant future fade into obscurity, then we are likely to wander off in the wrong direction. On the other hand, if we neglect the small and simple things right in front of us and obsess over skipping ahead to the end of the road, then we're likely to bump into and trip over the immediate obstacles in our way. The Holy Ghost can help us keep the right balance of focus on both what is right in front of us and what awaits us down the road. If we want our journey through life to be as smooth as possible we need to have a clear view of both the immediate steps in front of us as well as the ultimate destination that we are heading towards. A clear vision of our current situation will allow us to confront our reality with a practical, level-headed approach to solving our immediate problems instead of tripping and stumbling as we daydream about what life might be like if we had already magically solved all of these problems. A clear vision of where we are headed long term will allow us to make strategic sacrifices and forgo distracting blind alleys and dead ends so that we may avoid wasting precious time and resources on pursuits that can't get us to where we want to go. We absolutely need to be able to see without any fuzziness our immediate surroundings and our ultimate destination and when we have the Spirit as our guide, we can put on the Spiritual Bifocals we need to navigate our way back to our Heavenly Father.
