On Towards The Next Adventure

They say that the past is a foreign country. To carry the metaphor a little farther, every time we enter a new year, a new day, even a new hour, we are leaving the old time behind. As we head into this new year, it is important to remember that all of us are entering into a brand new time, filled with possibilities and challenges none of us have ever faced before. Yes, in many respects today looks much the same as it did yesterday, but the truth is that moment by moment we leave our pasts behind and enter into a brand new present. We may cling to the illusion that we must carry the past with us, but it is simply not true. We can carry memories with us, like photo albums of our times in foreign countries, but we can't actually ever go back to the past. The 2022 version of ourselves is forever in the foreign land of 2022, and there is no extradition treaty. We have the chance as we enter the new year to try new ways of navigating our way through life. No one is forcing us to carry on in the same routines. We can forge a new path, try things differently in this new country we have entered. Maybe we'll make things worse, but maybe we'll make them better. And, in any case, whether we've chosen wisely or poorly, tomorrow we have a chance once again to go on towards the next adventure.
