Touching Heaven

I can’t quite remember if I was watching a Movie or a TV show or if I read it in a book so I don’t know to whom to give credit, but I have this scene in my head of a small child saying that they are going to touch the moon, and someone else, maybe a parent or other adult, saying it’s impossible, and then the child ends up touching the moon in the reflection of some water. The child understood that heaven is often much closer than we imagine. In October 1971, President Spencer W Kimball gave a talk in General Conference called “Glimpses of Heaven.” In it he describes how someone asked him “‘Brother Kimball, have you ever been to heaven?’ My answer seemed to be a shock of equal magnitude to him as I said without hesitation: ‘Why, yes, Brother Richards, certainly. I had a glimpse of heaven just before coming to your studio.’” President Kimball went on to describe various glimpses he’d had of Heaven, scenes of peace and joy and unity. We may think that Heaven is this remote, far away place, just as we may think that the moon is much, much too far for us to reach out and touch. But Heaven is right here among us. If we had the faith to pierce the veil that is upon us, we would see Heaven in all of its glory. Sometimes, when we are very lucky, we get small glimpses of it. And the closer and closer we draw to our Savior, the thinner and the thinner will be the veil obscuring our view of Heaven. I know that Heaven is within arm’s reach of each of us. I know that we don’t have to wait until after we are dead to start enjoying it. I know that whenever two or three are gathered together in love and unity in the name of Christ, then Heaven is there.
