Unfolding The Mysteries Of God

“For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.” (1 Nephi 10:19). The part of the brain that we use for thinking is called the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex isn't very thick. You could almost think of it as the skin of the brain. But it's also where pretty much all of our neurons are, so since it's relatively thin, in order to pack in all of those neurons, it has all of these folds and creases to maximize its surface area. When we are promised that the mysteries of God will be unfolded to us, we could imagine that phrase to mean something like the mysteries of God are written on the inside of a folded up piece of paper, and we have to unfold the paper to be able to read the mysteries. That's probably at least partly correct. But remembering that the thinking part of our brain lives on all of these little folds, then maybe the only way to truly experience the mysteries of God is to stop trying to understand them in our tiny, folded up brains. Our brains are truly incredible and can think up and understand all sorts of things. There are whole rooms full of computers all working on trying to simulate the neural structure of a cat's brain, so imagine how many computers they would need to model a human’s brain. But even so, even linking up all of the smartest brains among all humans across thousands of years and we can't get much of a grip on understanding God and His mysteries. We can't really prove the existence of God because we would have to fold Him up a billion times just to get Him to fit inside of our heads, and even that wouldn't be very useful because then we would be back at the same problem in the beginning of trying to guess what might be written on the inside of a folded up piece of paper without any possible way of reading it. But if we diligently seek to understand God and all of His mysteries, if we pray with a sincere heart and real intent, having faith in Christ, then by the power of the Holy Ghost, the mysteries of God can be unfolded unto us, or, to put it another way, we can be carried away by the Spirit out from the confines of our folded up brain so that we can see and feel and understand beyond our natural capacity. We can't behold God with our natural eyes and we can't comprehend Him with our natural brain, but we can do both by the power of the Holy Ghost. We won't be able to fully articulate our understanding once we are folded back into our own brain, but as long as we have the constant companionship of the Spirit, there is no reason that we can't unfold ourselves as often as we wish so that we may behold the mysteries and the glory of God once more.
