David was not the obvious choice to fight Goliath. In fact, when the Prophet Samuel visited Jesse and asked to see his sons, Jesse did not think it would be important to go and fetch David to meet the prophet. That's how low David's status was - an overlooked son of a shepherd, hardly the best man for the job when it comes to defending the honor of a nation and a God. But David had one qualification that the rest of the men of Israel lacked. He was the only one with the desire to stand up and defend his country and his God. “Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work;” (D&C 4:3). There wasn't a single person in all of Israel that had the strength or the stature or the skill at arms to go toe to toe with the giant Goliath and have anything like a fighting chance. But that wasn't the point. God only needed one person, even an overlooked shepherd boy, who had the desire to stand up and serve. And because David had that desire, he was the one called, and he was the one that the Lord blessed with victory. There are in our day Goliaths everywhere we look and many of us believe, rightfully so, that we are too small and weak and unimportant to solve them. But it doesn't matter how big we are or how much money or power or influence we have. What matters is that we have the desire to stand up and serve and take care of these Goliaths. If we act on those desires, then we are called to the work. And as we put our trust in the Lord, He will be with us to show us the way. David ended up defending Goliath not because he was magically gifted with Godlike strength or invincibility. He faced the challenge using a skill that was available to him - throwing rocks with a sling - and he emerged victorious. If we act on our desires to serve, we will be amazed not only that the Lord will help us defeat the Goliaths we face, but so often He will show us how to do so using small and simple means that are completely already in our wheelhouse without any kind of obvious Divine intervention, aside from the subtle enabling power of His grace. I know that the world is too big and its problems are far too mighty and scary and we are far too small and weak and foolish to have a hope of conquering them, but I do know if we will just have that desire to serve anyway, God will call us and qualify us and magnify our efforts and show us the way that we may come off the conqueror.
