We Magnify Our Callings, Our Callings Magnify Us
“Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?” (Moses 6:31). So said Enoch when the Lord called him to preach His gospel. Enoch is not alone in voicing these specific complaints when called upon by the Lord. Moses also warned the Lord that he was slow of speech. Jeremiah argued that, like Enoch, he was just a lad and no one would listen to him. These became some of the most powerful prophets to ever live. It’s a very justifiable justification to ignore or deny a prompting from the Spirit because we feel we are unqualified to act on the Lord’s behalf. We wouldn’t be wrong. If we had to rely on our wisdom, our own strength and abilities, we would not measure up to any calling from the Lord. We have been told that we need to magnify our callings. This magnification has more to do with developing the humility and the worthiness to let the Spirit in to lead and guide us than it does our own efforts without the spirit to grow or expand the calling. But the wonderful thing about following the Spirit and allowing God to work through us is that we may start out slow of speech or too inexperienced or unqualified or not talented or wise or strong enough, we do not stay that way. The Brother of Jared’s stones were not up to the task of lighting his barges, but after the Lord touched those stones and filled them with His light, their very nature changed - forever. Enoch may have started out slow of speech but he did not stay that way. When we trust the Lord enough to embrace our calling, He will magnify not only our calling but ourselves. He will fill us with His light and change us forever.
