“For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.” (2 Nephi 2:11). When we talk about the necessity for there to be opposition in all things, I think we tend to focus on only one side of the equation. It can't be all sunshine and rainbows because there must be doom and gloom to oppose the bright happy things of life. When bad things happen to us, it is because there must be that opposition. But Lehi did not say there must be opposition to every good thing. He said there must be opposition in all things. That means if there are bad things happening in our lives, then there must be good things that rise up to oppose them. What if instead of weeping and wailing because as good as we try to be bad things keep happening to us we flip the script? Instead of God allowing bad things to happen to us, God is trusting us enough to allow us to be the good thing that happens to the evil and sadness and misery in the world. We need to stop living in fear that some evil or tragedy is going to rear its ugly head and burst our happy little bubble and instead we need to go forth with all of our goodness and start bursting every bubble of evil that we can find. I hope that we can stop worrying about the evil that is arrayed in opposition to us and start thinking of ways that we can be the opposition of goodness against every evil thing that we can find.
