Wherewith Shall It Be Salted
"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (Matthew 5:13). What do we do when we feel like we've lost our savor? Are we good for nothing? Is there no way to get the savor back? There are going to be a lot of voices out there saying that we are good for nothing, and sometimes one of the loudest voices is our own. But while the rest of the world would love nothing more than to trod us under foot, thanks to the Atonement and the gospel of Jesus Christ, if we have lost our savor we can always get it back. When we repent and partake of the Sacrament, we are promised the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. And the holy ghost brings back the savor to our lives. "The gift of the Holy Ghost...quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands, and purifies all the natural passions and affections, and adapts them, by the gift of wisdom, to their lawful use. It inspires, develops, cultivates, and matures all the fine-toned sympathies, joys, tastes, kindred feelings, and affections of our nature. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness, and charity. It develops beauty of person, form, and features. It tends to health, vigor, animation, and social feeling. It invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens and gives tone to the nerves. In short, it is, as it were, marrow to the bone, joy to the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being." (Parley P. Pratt). If our lives seem dull and tasteless and good for nothing, then we need to work a little harder to get the Holy Ghost back in our lives. God didn't send us out to Earth so His children could have some nice sand to walk on. He sent us here as the Salt of the Earth, as vessels and bearers of His Holy Spirit, to bring savor and joy and light and music and life to the world through our and the Holy Ghost's combined infinite goodness.
