“He lives to silence all my fears” (Samuel Medley, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”). A certain night the Savior and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a sudden storm struck them. The fierce winds and waves were shaking the little fishing boat so violently that the disciples, several of them seasoned and experienced fishermen, were so afraid that they cried out to their Lord, “Master, carest not that we perish?” (Mark 4:38). And then, Jesus said, “Peace, be still.” But to whom did Jesus address those words? Was He talking to the storm and the sea, or to His disciples? To paraphrase Jesus on another occasion, For whether is easier, to say, Thy fears be silenced, or, Let the winds cease and the waves be calm? When Jesus promised us that He would give us His peace, but not as the world giveth (John 14:27), this is what He is talking about. The world would say that unless the winds and the waves have ceased, there can be no peace. But the Savior says, if you will look unto me with faith, doubt not, fear not, but only be believing, then you shall have peace, regardless of the storms raging all around you. Jesus Christ was in the same boat in the same terrible storm, but while His disciples were filled with fear and panicking, Jesus Christ’s heart was filled with such unconquerable peace that He was sound asleep in the midst of so much chaos. There will always be fears screaming for our attention and trying to disturb the peace that our Savior has prepared for us. But if we will reach out with faith to our Savior Jesus Christ, He will silence those fears so that we may have Peace, and Be still, and know that Jesus has all power, both in Heaven, and on Earth.
