Remember Them No More

“Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more.” (D&C 58:42). When we were born, we passed through a veil of forgetfulness. Most of us can't remember very much from our premortal lives. I'm sure we occasionally get echoes or feelings of deja vu when we are in certain situations that must have been very similar to our time before we came to this Earth. No doubt there are certain aspects of our personality and temperament that were shaped by our choices and patterns of behavior from before we were born. But for the most part, after our birth and after we passed through the veil of forgetfulness, we could remember no more our successes and failures from before. The Lord promises that if we repent, He will remember our sins no more. But it is not just the Lord that will remember them no more if we have repented properly. A big part of the repentance process is to be born again. This means we take on a new life, but also, as with our first birth, it means we have the opportunity to pass once more through the veil of forgetfulness. We have an opportunity through the repentance process to follow the example of our Lord by remembering our sins or the lives we led no more. We may get echoes of that past life. Our present day personalities and habits may continue to show a certain degree of influence from that past life, but to be truly forgiven of the Lord and born again means that we have gone again through the veil and do not have to carry around with us any longer the memories that for so long have haunted and plagued us. If we repent consistently and constantly and completely, and are born again from moment to moment, then we will truly be able to say with the Lord that we remember our sins no more.
