No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

“No good deed goes unpunished.” This may often be said with a cynical air, but it is nevertheless completely true. Just as it is impossible for us to avoid forever the consequences of our bad choices, so too is it impossible for us to make a good choice without there being a consequence. We may not always see the fruits of our good deeds immediately or even at all during our mortal life, but every good deed has an effect. Our families, our communities, the world in general are made up of the millions of decisions and actions of each of the people in it. Every time we choose to do good we are making the world a slightly better place than it had been. If we are at times discouraged because it seems like our efforts to improve our lives and the lives of those around us go unthanked or unnoticed, we can take comfort in the very true statement that no good deed goes unpunished.
