The Anointer

Christ and Messiah mean "the Anointed One." I was trying to think why The Anointed One is such an important title for the Savior and so I was reading a little bit more about the practice of anointing and it generally served three purposes. It was to provide health and comfort, to bring honor to, and to consecrate. I think this describes Christ's purpose very well. He came to Earth to bring healing and comfort to the sick and afflicted. He came to Earth to bring honor to His Father, to do the work and glory of God, to bring about the immortality and eternal life of God's children. He came to Earth to consecrate or to make holy all of those who world forsake their sins and follow Him. Christ is not only the Anointed but also the Anointer. He can anoint us with the healing and cleansing power of His Atonement. He can anoint us to a higher purpose and a greater calling. And he can anoint us to be holy, to be called by His name, to be worthy to return to the presence of our Heavenly Father.
