The Heat Of Resistance

Because no conductor is perfect, any copper wire or other electrical conductor will inevitably lose some of the electricity it is conducting, which is dissipated as heat into the wire. As the heat increases, so does the resistance. This increased resistance causes more electricity to be dispersed as heat, which makes it more resistive. The power and the heat together help to increase the resistance. This is bad news if you are trying to conduct electricity from a power plant to a home, but actually this heating by resistance is the very process by which a lightbulb gives off its light. For all of us who are beset on every side by temptations and sins against which we seem to have so very little power to resist, it may seem somewhat counterintuitive to focus on building our testimony and strengthening our connection to the Holy Ghost. If we keep failing to resist the devil and all of his wiles, then how can we hope to entice our Heavenly Father to fill us with His power when we are so weak and unworthy of His help? Focusing on the gospel fundamentals when we have so many bigger problems that we are powerless to solve does not feel like a winning strategy. This is especially true if we go through with it and find that even though we are praying and reading our scriptures and attending church and doing all of this important things, we nevertheless find that our ability to resist evil is just as disappointingly feeble as ever. But if we stick with it and little by little invite the Spirit to flow through us and to warm us like a fire burning, even if we don't seem to get a specific boost to resist our particular Achilles’ heel of a temptation, our capacity to resist will grow as they fire of the Spirit grows hotter and hotter within us. Our testimony will give us a higher degree of resistance, which will then fan the flames of our testimony as we through the grace of God begin to more successfully resist evil. Resisting evil will grow our testimony, and growing our testimony will help grow our ability to resist. We don't need to wait until we have successfully resisted evil before we try to seek out the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Inviting His presence into our lives is the heat that will strengthen our resistance and make it possible for us to resist it. I hope we can always be fully committed to letting the Spirit of God like a fire burning fill us with the heat of resistance, so that we can become locked in a positive feedback loop of filling ourselves more and more with the heat and power of the Spirit, which makes us more and more resistant, which gives us more and more room for the Spirit, and on and on.
