Trust Fall

A trust fall is when a person demonstrates the trust that they have in another by standing in front of them and facing away from them and willingly falling backwards and trusting that the other person will catch them. In a way, each of us are engaged in a trust fall with our Heavenly Father. After all, Adam and Eve fell when they partook of the forbidden fruit, and each of us as their descendents inherited that fall. Just by being born, each of us started our own trust fall with Heavenly Father. Thankfully, as much as we might be tempted to disbelieve, He will catch us as often as we allow Him. This trust goes both ways. Our Heavenly Father had to place an incredible level of trust in us to allow us to fall. He knows and loves us perfectly and would suffer unimaginable sorrow if He were to be cut off from us forever. Despite all of this, He valued our agency and our capacity to choose and shape our own desires enough that He created a set of conditions where we could choose for ourselves. This meant that we might choose to be cut off from Him forever. But it also meant that we might choose to set aside our worries and doubts and the sins which so easily beset us and ignore all of the reasons that we have to be bitter and resentful and choose to honor and obey and embrace Him. God trusted us to fall because He knows that many of us will choose to pick ourselves up again. As much as we need to refine our capacity to trust in and rely upon the Lord with all of our heart, one of the ways that we can do this is to trust in the trust that the Lord has placed in us. He knows that we are strong enough to overcome anything that He throws at us, so let's go forth with confidence that every time we fall, God trusts us to get back up again.
