The Stone is Not Enough
“But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” (Exodus 17:12). During the first battle of the children of Israel after leaving Egypt, when Moses held up his hands, the children of Israel prevailed, and when he lowered his hands, they began to lose. They gave Moses a stone to support himself, but this was not enough. The church of Jesus Christ is a rock or a stone upon which we can build our lives and find strength and support. But just as with Moses, the stone is not enough. Just as Moses had his brother and his nephew to help hold up his hands and fulfill his calling, so too do we need each other to support us and help us to accomplish our goals. We can’t do the work God gave us to do alone, and as important as it is to rely on the strength of the Lord, it is also important to confide and trust and rely on each other to help us accomplish the work we have to do. Even Jesus Christ Himself had Simon the Cyrenian to help him carry his cross. We need to establish ourselves on the Rock of our redeemer, but we also need each other to help lift up the hands that hang down.
