“And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.” (Luke 4:23). Christ is the Physician, the Master Healer. But in what ways may He be said to heal Himself? For one thing, it is as true for Jesus Himself as it is for us that when we have done it unto one of the least, we have done it unto Him (Matthew 25:40). But why should this be so? “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” (John 17:20-23). Jesus goes to such great lengths to heal us firstly because He loves us with a pure love that passes all understanding but also because He is in us and we are in Him and we are all one together. In healing us, the Physician is healing Himself. In healing Himself, He heals us as well. He suffered the pains and sicknesses and afflictions of every living creature because He needed to understand exactly how to heal each and every one of us because we could not all be one together if we were not all of us healed every whit. When we put off our repentance and refuse to accept the healing grace of our Savior Jesus Christ, we are not only hurting ourselves, but we are also stopping the Physician from healing Himself, and healing everyone else who is a part of the One. I hope that we will all seek out healing with renewed vigor so that Christ the Physician can complete His great healing of Himself and all of us who make up a part of Him.
