"Give," Said The Little Stream

"Give," Said The Little Stream

“'Give,' said the little stream, as it hurried down the hill; 'I’m small, I know, but wherever I go the fields grow greener still.'” ("Give," Said The Little Stream, Fanny J Crosby). The little stream in this Primary Song knows its purpose and receives nothing but joy in living up to it. The stream does not horde water like a pond or a lake. It gives it away wherever it goes because it knows that the joy of seeing the fields grow greener is much sweeter than the miserly pleasure it might have received by greedily holding onto all of its water and refusing to share. A stream can only be a stream if it lets the water flow freely without any obstructions. If it tried to dam itself up, then one tiny part would have water, but the rest of the streambed would dry up and become a lifeless gully, to say nothing of all of the green fields that depended on the little stream's generosity. The more the stream gave away the more water could flow through it. The stream could have much, much more water in the end by giving away more and more than it could ever have if it had tried to hold onto every last drop. We will flourish and prosper to the degree that we selflessly give away all that the Father gives us, and we will wither and perish to the degree that we cut off the flow and share nothing. However small we may be, if we follow the example of the little stream and give oh give away wherever we go, then the fields will grow greener still. I know that God can only share with us His blessings as fast and as fully as we turn around and share those blessings with others. We have to find a way to let God's love flow through us or we will end up as nothing but a dried out streambed.
