Alliances
In French, the word for Covenant is translated into the word alliance. In a war, an alliance is what unites two forces so that they work together against a common enemy. When we make covenants with God, we are forming an alliance with Him, and thus, instead of being God’s enemies, we are His allies. “For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the fHoly Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.” (Mosiah 3:19). In any battle we face, our chances for success are ridiculously higher when we have God as our ally instead of treating Him as a neutral party or, even worse, as an enemy. The more covenants that we make and honor and strive to live up to, the stronger becomes our alliance with our Heavenly Father. We will begin to trust that when we are under attack, our Ally will be there to back us up and support us. And our Heavenly Father will begin to trust us with greater responsibility to fight the good fight against His enemies as well. I know that we would be fools to not make God our fiercest and staunchest ally. And I know that with God as our ally, we can overcome any enemy that stands in our way, even and perhaps especially when that enemy is our own natural tendencies towards self-destruction.
