Lief is an archaic adjective that means gladly or willingly. It comes from the Old English word leof, that means beloved, and is the source of the modern English words love and believe. So, lief, which again means gladly and willingly, love and belief are all descended from the same root word and are all closely related to each other. How do we show our love for our Heavenly Father? Through our beliefs. And how do we show our beliefs? By obeying our Father's commandments and doing His will. Or, in other words, by gladly and willingly being the child that our Heavenly Father knows that we can be. Our love strengthens our belief. Our belief strengthens our love. Our love and our belief makes it easier for us to be lief, or to gladly and willingly be who we are supposed to be. The more we love our Heavenly Father, the more we will trust Him and believe in His promises. The more we believe in Him, the more willing and lief we will be to bring about His work and His glory. We have a delightful opportunity to get swallowed up in an endless cycle of love begetting belief begetting willingness begetting love and on and on in one eternal round. I know that our lives will be forever enriched when we pray with all of the energy of heart to be filled with leof in all of its forms - love, life and belief.
