The Martian
I reread and rewatched The Martian this last week, which is about a man who gets left alone on Mars and how the whole world pulls together and spends countless time and resources and probably hundreds of millions of dollars to rescue him. It makes me think of the shepherd who will leave the ninety and nine to go after the one. It can be humbling when we are the one who has wandered and become lost to witness all of the time and resources spent trying to find and save and bring us back into the fold. Sometimes it may feel like we're way out on Mars and that we can't possibly be worth all of the efforts and expenses to bring us safely home. But our brothers and sisters and especially our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are only thinking about how we're in trouble and we need to be saved and we're worth every effort. And when we think on the many times where we have wandered so far and were so thoroughly lost and yet so many people dropped everything to come to our rescue, then it makes it easier for us to drop everything in turn and to look with compassion and love instead of judgment and malice at those who have wandered and become lost and to do everything in our power to save them, just as we have been saved.
