New Wine Into New Bottles

“And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.” (Mark 2:22). The bread and the water for the Sacrament are prepared new every single time. We use water now, but originally the Savior used wine. In essence, we are offered new “wine” every week that we partake of the Sacrament. This new wine must go into new bottles. Otherwise the new wine will burst the old bottles. In this case, the bottles represent our hearts. The Savior asks us to offer up each Sunday a sacrifice of our old and broken heart. It is called a sacrifice because we are required to give up our old and broken heart, but it is really more of an exchange, because the Savior has a new heart to give us for every old one that we are willing to part with. This new heart can receive the new wine of the Sacrament without immediately bursting. If we don’t offer our old heart to the Savior when we partake of the Sacrament, then the new wine will spill out, and we will have a hard time throughout the week remembering our Savior and having His Spirit to be with us. We don’t ever have to get stuck with an old and broken and leaky heart. We have the opportunity each week to exchange our old heart for a new one that can hold all of the new wine without spilling one precious drop.
