The True Vine
Jesus Christ said He is the true vine. When we are cut off from the Lord, we can feel like a cast off branch, not good for much except to be broken or burnt. But as we abide in Christ’s love, as we become a part of the true vine, then we can bear fruit. On our own, the best we can do is to burn ourselves out in a momentary blaze of light and heat. But with Christ, we can take God’s light and convert it into good works, into the fruits of the spirit which bring warmth and light that far outpaces the momentary flash of the light of our own fire. We think that by joining with the true vine we’re giving up our identity as a solitary stick, but isn’t it much better to be filled with light and life and fruit than to be a cold, brittle, lonely stick? Any one branch may not be as important as the whole vine, but even the smallest twig that is part of the true vine can bear more fruit than the mightiest branch that has been cut off. Christ wants us to be a part of Him so He can be a part of us.
