Meant to Lose
We are meant to lose. Losing is not a flaw in the grand design but one of the most important parts. It is natural to fight against this. It is natural to want to save our lives, to prepare against this loss, to be stronger and wiser and cleverer than this world that is designed against us winning. But it doesn’t matter how strong we are, how smart we are, how much we’ve prepared, how much money we get, how many friendships or alliances we cultivate, we are still going to lose. If we did not become lost then we would have no need for a Savior. Loss is inevitable. We do not have a choice in whether or not we are going to lose. We do have a choice in how we are going to lose. We can fight against this loss and try to hold on to our vision of what this life should be. Or we can lose our life for the Lord’s sake. We can recognize that losing was always part of the bargain, and that only by losing would we ever have the humility to reach out to the Savior. It is hard to lose. It’s hard to let go of our vision for what our life could be. It is hard to accept that loved ones die before we were ready for them to go. It is hard to watch our dreams evaporate. It’s hard to watch our health worsen. But all of these things shall be but a moment, and if we endure them well, if we lose for the Lord’s sake, then all of these losses will work together for our good, and will be for our experience. Losing was always part of the plan, but just as importantly, Saving was always part of the plan, and you can’t save what hasn’t been lost.
