Like Gasoline To A Match
"We are saved by grace after all we can do." My thought today is similar to Elder Renlund's April 2019 conference talk but I have a slightly different take. If we compare our efforts, our work, or "all we can do" to the light and heat produced by a match, on its own, all we can do doesn't seem very impressive. But if grace is applied to our efforts, then like gasoline to a match we can generate a lot more heat and warmth. But as wonderful and powerful as grace is, it can have no effect without effort on our part, just like dowsing an unlit match in oil is not going to have any effect. On our own, we quickly burn out and shrivel up and grow cold and brittle. But with grace we can keep that small tiny flame that represents all we can do burning long after we would have burnt out on our own. Without grace, we are like the foolish virgins with no oil in our lamps. But without works, we're like the even more foolish people who don't even have a lamp. All we can do may seem small and insignificant, but if we do all we can do then the Savior can fill us with His power, His light and His warmth in ways we couldn't have imagined.
