All life, from single-celled amoebas to blue whales to cherry trees to humans is made up of different combinations of the four nucleobases found in DNA - Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G), and Thymine (T). Life in all of its infinite complexity is made by mixing and matching A, C, G, and T. “Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.” (Alma 37:6). I was thinking about what might be considered the simple building blocks of our Heavenly Father’s plan for us. What would be the A, C, G, and T of the Plan of Salvation? There may be other, better answers, but what I came up with is Agency (A), Charity (C), Grace (G), and Truth (T). Each of these are essential to our Heavenly Father’s Plan for our Eternal Progression. Our agency is so important that God was willing to sacrifice His Only Begotten Son in order to preserve our right and responsibility to make our own choices. And as part of that Infinite Sacrifice comes Grace, the enabling power of Jesus Christ’s Atonement, to help us to overcome the consequences that arise when we choose poorly. And to help us to discern between good and evil, and between better and best, our Heavenly Father reveals to us eternal Truth through the mouths of His servants and by the power of the Holy Ghost to show us the best way to exercise our agency and apply our Savior’s grace into our daily lives. And binding all of this together, turning our hearts to our Father and our Father’s hearts to us, is Charity, the pure love of Christ. By combining Agency, Charity, Grace and Truth, we can unlock the infinite varieties and wonders of our Heavenly Father’s Plan of Happiness, just as Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine unlock the infinite varieties and wonders of life on Earth.
