In Nephi Chapter 9, Nephi talks about how he was inspired to make two sets of plates. “Upon the other plates should be engraven an account of the reign of the kings, and the wars and contentions of my people; wherefore these plates are for the more part of the ministry; and the other plates are for the more part of the reign of the kings and the wars and contentions of my people. Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.” Some of us can get so wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of daily life that we can neglect to focus on the Lord. And some of us can become so consumed by trying to live the gospel to the fullest that we neglect many of the necessary and important non-spiritual parts of life. The Lord through Nephi has shown us that it is a wise purpose in Him to dedicate time and attention and energy to both secular and religious pursuits. We should be making a conscious effort to make the most of our experiences in this life, both spiritual and temporal. Over time, we will grow in our understanding of both the world and our Heavenly Father, and we will no longer need to divide our attention between our two sets of plates, but they will instead grow together so that we no longer have to differentiate between what is worldly and what is Godly, but until we have reached that higher level of understanding, it is important for us to neither neglect the spiritual nor the physical aspects of our lives, but to keep an accounting of all of our time and make sure that we are dedicating it to things that are worth recording and remembering.
