The Bread of Adversity and the Water of Affliction

In Isaiah 30:20, it talks about the Lord giving us "the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction." It goes on in verse 23 to talk about "the rain… and bread of the increase of the earth." In the Lord's prayer, Christ pleads with Heavenly Father to "give us this day our daily bread." Sometimes we get the bread of adversity, and sometimes we get the bread of the increase of the earth. The Bread of Adversity and the water of affliction may not taste as sweet, but they keep us alive, and they give us spiritual nutrients that we couldn't get in any other way. It isn't always a pleasant experience repenting and partaking of the bread and water of the Sacrament. Sometimes the emblems of the sacrament signify our adversity and affliction. This is entirely appropriate. After all, they always represent the adversity and affliction that our Savior suffered for our sakes. But sometimes the bread and the water of the sacrament are sweet to our souls and represent all of the progress we have made, all of the increase of the earth that has happened because we are doing all that we can to make the world a better place. Neither the bread of adversity nor the bread of increase are better than the other. They both have their place in our lives and as long as we can sincerely say give us this day our daily bread, whether it be sweet or bitter, then we can always have the Spirit to be with us.
