O Little Town of Bethlehem
Bethlehem translates from Hebrew into “The House of Bread.” “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35). The Bread of Life was born in the House of Bread. We partake of bread during the Sacrament each week not only in remembrance of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, but also in remembrance of His mission to be the Bread of Life. We are children of God placed in frail mortal bodies on a fallen world. Hunger is an inescapable part of our existence. But if we come unto Jesus Christ, we shall never hunger. He will give us bread because He is our Lord. The word Lord comes from the Old English “hlafweard”, which means “bread-keeper”. As often as we turn to our Lord, our Bread-Keeper, He will give us bread to fill our souls and take away the hunger.
