Faithful Over A Few Things

In the Parable of the Talents, the Lord gives one servant five talents, another two talents, and another one talent. Two of the servants manage to double the amount they started with; one of the servants didn’t bother doing anything with what they received. It is easy to see how the servant with one talent may have rationalized his unfaithfulness. Oh, sure, if I had five talents, it would have been easy for me to double them, but one talent, I mean, come on! What could I possibly have done with only one talent? But it is almost as easy to see the servant with five talents making similar rationalizations. If I had just one talent, I would only need one more to double it, but how am I supposed to get five more? Whether we’ve been given much, or whether we’ve been given little, all the Lord requires is that we are faithful over the few things that He has given us. And make no mistake. Whether we are beggars or billionaires, compared to the infinite vastness of time and space and all that the Father has, even the very richest of the rich have been given only a few things. We might think that we have so little that trying to make something of ourselves could hardly be worth the effort. We may have been given so much that we feel a little guilty trying to grow and expand even more. God doesn’t really care if we’ve got one talent or fifty, whether we’ve doubled our talents or grown them by only one percent. What He cares about is that we are being faithful stewards over the few things that He’s given us. What He cares about is that we are anxiously engaged in getting the most out of our time here on Earth. I know that if we are faithful over a few things God will make us ruler over many things.
