Urim and Thummim translate from Hebrew into “lights” and “perfections”. It is through the Urim and Thummim that seers and prophets could see things as they really are and as they really will be. We need both the lights - seeing things as they really are - and the perfections - seeing things as they really will be. If we are to become translated line upon line from our corrupt and fallen state into our eternal and celestial glory, then we have to have a realistic idea of where we are at right now and what the next steps we must take to get to where we need to go. It is important that these are lights - plural - and perfections - plural. The more diligent and faithful we are at continuously repenting and honoring our covenants and the more fully and completely we incorporate Christ's saving grace, the more clearly we will be able to perceive both where we are at and where we need to get to. Every time we learn and grow, the lights by which we view ourselves and our present circumstances will change. We will not be fooled by the false images either of “good enough as we are” or “we’ll never be good enough no matter how hard we try”. We will not run faster than we have strength but will bear with patience the road in front of us. And as we reach each new milestone, we will be blessed with new versions of perfection that show us the next leg of our journey. We will go through thousands of lights and thousands of perfections on our journey through life but that is just as it should be. How wonderful that our Heavenly Father has prepared a distinct guiding light and a beckoning vision of perfection for each and every moment of our lives!
