My Burden Is Light
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30). Christ says that His burden is light. Light can mean both not heavy or the source of illumination. Interestingly enough, light is actually one of the lightest substances in the universe, as it is composed of particles called photons which have zero mass. Christ knows that we are heavy laden. He does not want to add more weight to the load we have to carry. Therefore, His burden is light. It's knowledge. It's truth. When He invites us to take His yoke upon us, Christ then asks us to learn of Him. These are one and the same. To learn of Him is to take His yoke upon us, to take His light for our burden. The more that we understand Christ, the more of His light that we carry with us, the greater will be our capacity to bear the burdens we must bear, and endure the hardships that we must endure. We will see the grand purpose in our suffering and praise God for the light that He has burdened us with, for in that light and truth will we find rest for our souls. We will cease to wonder if all of this is worth it. We will cease to fear that we will collapse under the weight of it all. By filling our burdens with His light, Christ gives us the vision and the strength and the hope to keep on carrying our burden, not to failure or ruin but to salvation and exaltation and to exchange for a far weightier crown of glory and light. Christ's burden is not just a light burden. Christ's burden is Light.
