Iron Rod
I was thinking about why the word of God is likened unto a rod of iron in Lehi's dream, especially when contrasted with the mists of darkness. A rod of iron is straight, solid, unyielding. It's something you can grab onto. It's something that is real. The mists of darkness, on the other hand, are insubstantial, inconsequential. Like billions of droplets of water swirling aimlessly, the thoughts and norms and standards of the world are constantly changing and going in and out of style. What was acceptable and applauded even five years ago is now detested and deplored and canceled today. There is nothing dependable or reliable or solid or graspable in these mists of darkness. But the word of God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Like an iron rod, we can hold onto it without it dissolving away, we can rely on its guidance and direction because it is always pointing us in the right direction.
