Re-Solution

This may not be the correct etymology, but I think it might be useful to consider the word resolution as composed of the elements "re" and "solution." We know that "re" typically means again, like in retry or reread or redo. And solution means an answer to a problem. So, if you think about it, a resolution could mean repeated attempts at a solution. I would argue that any goal you might set starts out as a solution and doesn't become a "resolution" until you've given up and quit and then started again at least once. I know many of us may have made New Year's Resolutions and probably nearly as many have already failed at least once to live up to our resolution in some way. This is OK. It's not really a resolution until we've quit and then re-started our re-solution. We make resolutions because we know we are going to need to make multiple tries before we arrive at the solution. We usually know what the problem is, and we can often summon up the courage and motivation to work on the problem, but we don't always know what the solution is going to be. That's why we need to be committed to keep re-solving the problem again and again until we get to the answer. We may be discouraged that our first idea did not solve the problem, but each time we try, we increase our experience and expand our knowledge and abilities and we come to understand the problem and ourselves at a deeper level, and make it far more likely that we will solve the problem in the end. Just remember, it only becomes a re-solution after you've quit and restarted at least once.
